A 2010 adaptation of “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” brings a fresh new twist to this family stage production at Cabaret Dinner Theatre with performance dates moved to February 19-20-21, 2015.
Twelve year old Brandon Roberts of Bossier City and Amber Garner of Frierson are the perfect age to portray the leading roles of Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatcher. Brandon told us, “Everyone should have an Aunt Polly in their life….Betty Baker is perfect for this role……she keeps me in line.” And Amber adds, “And the audience is going to love this one!.....It’s a great story.” Betty Baker brings a true image of the elderly Aunt Polly to life as she is “trying so hard to raise her poor dead sister’s two children the right way” in spite of Tom’s goofing off friend Huckleberry Finn, played by Sam Ingram. Tom’s tattle telling younger brother, Sid, is played by Christopher Compas of Stonewall.
This simple Black Box setting allows Laura Eason’s new adaptation to flow from one scene to another with choreographed movement, music and plenty of imagination left to the audience to understand this long standing legendary summer adventure story. The portrayed murder scene of Doc Robinson is witnessed by Tom and Huck who run scared from the grave yard as the only witnesses to the tragedy carried out by Injun Joe, played by Michael Gagnard of Shreveport. Tim Neill returns to Cabaret as the accused Muff Potter.
The novel’s original author, Mark Twain, is played by Ken Murphy, who is the Narrator, keeping the audience on track for this fast paced two Act play.
Director Paul Moore says, “We have a wonderful cast of community theatre volunteers. Jerry Howard runs the lights and sound as our Technical Director. It’s a family affair for several members of the cast. Marilyn Couch, a retired graphic artist and grandmother, brings her talents along for several scene designs as well as seeing her granddaughter, Sadie, be a part of the show.” According to Marilyn, “Paul has me coordinating the costumes from the 1840 era, but fortunately with the able assistance of Michele Compas and Jane Ryder.” Todd & Kelly Roberts are making it a family affair with their son, Brandon, who has the leading role. Todd is the Master Robinson teacher in the school scenes, while his wife, Kelly, is Props Mistress, working as a stage hand, and in the crowd scenes. Jan Jones is Stage Manager, with Leslie Turner as her Asst Stage Manager. Her son, Sean Turner, returns to the stage as Joe Harper.
Other cast and crew includes Debra Thompson, Daniel Jones, Lara Lyons, Linda Johnson, Abigail Johnson, Sarah Johnson, Krista Johnson, Anne Garner and Mason Garner.
A parade float theme of “Tom Sawyer” will be featured in the upcoming Highland Parade on February 15th.
